‘Melancholia’ is my first-born costume project and as it evolved into its final stages, it awakened the best of my creative core. The project centres around an abandoned carousel who mistakenly causes the death of a child. The costume had to be an evocation of the feelings the carousel has in its inanimate state as it ponders upon both the nature of the accident and the rejection that followed. Just like the carousel, I also went through quite a challenging time with figuring out how to keep the asymmetrical skirt balanced on a cage base once it would be worn by a model. Challenges like these help us think in layers and find solutions where previously there was none. That is what makes life an ongoing journey of learning.
