The Grid Project
“The Grid Apartment” is a project inspired by the Fischer House of Louise Isadore Kahn and its modular structure with straight lines. The main concepts in this case are loft, extrusion, and reticle and you can notice each of them in each space. My aim was to create an apartment for a woman and her son, but the child lives one week with his father and another with his mother. I had to take into account that there have to be the following spaces: a kitchen where you can cook and chat with friends, a reading area, a bedroom, a bathroom, and an area for the child who likes to play Play Station. Moreover, they have a cat so it’s just another tiny space.

The Apartment Plan
The largest area is a kitchen with multi-use. Since the apartment is not very big, I had to think very carefully about what spaces can be combined. In this case, I combined the kitchen, living room, and work area. Thanks to this very large table, different levels could be created to better zone different activities. We continue with the bathroom, which is very striking from my point of view. It is covered with two colors of tiles: the clear ones divide the shower and the “entrance” area from another half which is some kind of red “box” inserted in there. In the bedroom, we can see two areas that can be «joined» and «divided» by turning the wooden slats in different directions. This is used to create private spaces for the mother and her child. In addition, the child’s area can be multi-use because the sofa can be converted into a bed when he comes over and back when someone wants to read or spend some time there. Also, I think it’s important to mention that the grid concept can be found on shelves and cabinets around the flat.

As it was said before, one of my concepts was loft, so I used these materials with kinda industrial vibe to represent it. Different kinds of wood, pure concrete and such imperfect stone — everything is an integral part of the project. Nevertheless, I tried to use tiles of various types, including red ones, to create a visible contrast in some areas and to add something special to my project.
