"A Domestic Struggle" is an installation of ten photographs, documenting the link between and challenges of domestic life and mental health. It is an illustration of the internal struggle expressed externally through the sometimes-confining home environment. In a documentary style of photography, through still life and varying light sources, the photographs depict, anxiety, repetition, calmness, reflection, scrutiny, and the paralysis of time. Taken entirely indoors, and mostly within the absence of a prominent or natural light source, this series utilizes the element of light to recreate different moods. The variance in light is used to mimic the constant fluctuations from anxiety to serenity. The goal of this series is to demonstrate the overwhelming struggle through subtle signs that seep out of the mind and into reality in everyday life at home. When looking at setting and one’s surroundings, as it is not always obvious, a struggle can be expressed in many different ways and differ from person to person. By using different parts of the home, or apartment in the case of this series, it intends to reflect a personal struggle with mental health through everyday items and chores. Inspired by recent troubles, this series of photographs is a way to express paralyzed motivation and inspiration, hence the confining setting. Each photograph illustrates a struggle in its own way. Apart they may seem irrelevant, however together, using colour and monochrome in tandem with other elements of photography, then ten photographs are tied together in their own story. This series is shot entirely using a DSLR camera to be able to attain the desired look and feel of the images taken in darkened spaces. The light sources used are a desk lamp, phone light, and an overhead stove light.
