Biografía

Originally from Malaysia, Lay Hoon who works under the moniker Guava is a Peranakan artist currently based in Canada whose works spans art jewellery, digital installation and illustrations. Peranakans are an ethnic group descended from Chinese settlers from the southern provinces who came to British Malaya  In between the 15 to 17th centuries. They are native-born person of mixed local and foreign ancestry.  The artist started out with a Bachelor Degree in Bioengineering but chose to make a career switch within a year of working in the field. Art and Design has always been her calling and it was something she could no longer ignore despite objections from her conservative family. After completing her diploma in Multimedia Design, she worked as a graphic designer, fashion illustrator and eventually founded the artists collective, OtherHalf Studio. In 2019, she and her family moved to Canada where she studied Jewellery Design at Lasalle College Vancouver. This has given the artist a new avenue for her creative expressions and her metalsmithing training allowed her to create 3 dimensional wearable art. The art jewellery that she creates are often inspired by her personal life experience. Her aesthetics is highly influence by her Peranakan Heritage and the contemporary world around her.
