The project consisted of designing a commercial space in a 7100 sq ft barge located in the West End. The idea of creating a spa arises taking in consideration the weather in Vancouver as it aims to provide a space for people to have a relaxed and soothing experience on sunny or rainy day. The west end is a vibrant, diverse, walkable and densely populated community located in downtown Vancouver. It is also a diverse community with people of all ages and ethnicities. The barge ran aground at Sunset Beach on November 15, 2021 due to strong winds and rain; since then, it has become a symbolic element of the West End. The design was created under the concept of a rowboat. Elements such as clean lines, minimal decor and aesthetic are seen throughout. Wooden materials and marble finishes derived from Scandinavian design which aim to create a relaxed and inviting atmosphere. The lighting selection in the Spa varies depending on the area and type of activity. To maintain a relaxed and peaceful atmosphere, drop ceilings featuring LED strip lights were selected for most of the spaces. This intends to have light spreading smooth and equally throughout. The common areas offer an optimal layout that are functional and accessible. Anti-slip flooring materials, good illumination, fire assemblies as well as uncluttered spaces benefit the overall safety of the people.
