Original Canada, also known as ORCA, is a tourism mobile application with its purpose to build a bridge that helps connect the history and knowledge of Indigenous people to new immigrants. The challenge was to create a space where non-Indigenous can learn, explore, and support Indigenous businesses and tourism while being respecting and raise awareness that the land of British Columbia is unseeded.
The pattern design influences came from Inuit and First Nation illustrations. The primary colour was inspired by the story of Phyllis Jack Webstad and her experience at a residential school, recognizing the traumatic experiences children went through while being forced to attend residential schools. The rounded shapes throughout the mobile application were used to appear approachable. The mobile application revolves on a badge system where the user will be motivated to obtain all badges by utilizing all features of the app such as travelling to points of interest or reading articles about indigenous history. The ultimate goal for this app is to promote human and social sustainability in communities.
