LCV & IDS 2021 Magazine

LaSalle College Vancouver collaborates with Interior Design Show every year. This is a magazine that shows information and insight into the interior design industry. The magazine is fully created by Adobe Indesign and supported by Photoshop and Illustrate. It's a good demonstration of my personal graphic design skills.

The design direction

Cover Page

The design direction is to combine Bauhaus and brutalism together. The main elements of Bauhaus to the graphic design are the three primary colors. While brutalism stands for rough and unadorned.

Content Page

I design this content page with different famous brutalism architecture pieces along with primary colors.

The Photography sect

Photography

The Photography section contains my photo selection all around the world. Every piece of them is a good present of brutalism architecture. I painted colors on the photo trying to show the contract on it since most of them are on a greyscale. It's a very interesting process for me to explore.

The rough, crude and

Photography

The rough, crude and brusque concrete is usually used as the final finish of the exterior wall. this is the most significant characteristic of brutalism. In these photography pages, the concept is to emphasize the finishes of different brutalism style components in both abstract and architectural photography. Even the most of them are concrete surfaces, they can tell a different story from their forms and surrounding. Colorful shades created to make a contrast on the image can clearly show the finish characteristics. it also creates a very interesting contrast to the mainly dull color brutalism pictures.

Guest of honor

The guest of honor section is to select a favorite designer and research their cases. I choose Ieoh Ming Pei as my research title. The most popular work from him is the glass pyramid of the Louvre.

In 1935, Pei traveled to the USA to study architecture and then moved on to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, first at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia. He completed many architectural projects in Boston, New York City, and Los Angeles in 1939 and, due to a World War II breakout, could not return to China. He worked with a National Defense Research Committee unit during the Second World War. Between 1945 to 1948 he was an assistant professor at Harvard University's Graduate School of Design, and he graduated in 1946 with a master's. In 1954, he became an American citizen.

Architecture collage

This collage shows a future outlook of brutalism. One reason for the rise of brutalism is the industrial revolution. As for nowadays, thinking of sustainable materials is a popular thesis among the industry. I am combining those two ideas to create the collage to show an insight into the next revolution of industry.
