The Sander Residence involved converting a 1,500 square foot condominium unit in a 1960’s building into a functional, inviting and family-friendly space. With two young girls, Mr. and Mrs. Sander required a minimum of three bedrooms and two bathrooms, with an open concept living space, working space that could be open or closed to the living space, and privacy for the master suite. Functional design considerations included maximizing storage and living spaces, and taking advantage of the natural light. As well, the family noted the importance of having a central gathering space to socialize as a family. While located in an older building, the unit has north-facing views to Kitsilano Beach, windows on the North, East and West sides, and a flexible floor plan that make the space a desirable blank canvas to create a family’s ideal living space. The design concept chosen for the Sander’s condo is “morning sunlight”: the soft, peaceful moment in the morning when the sunlight is just starting to poke though the curtains. Muted warm tones and natural materials and fabrics evoke the gentle, comforting feeling like the morning sunlight’s promise of a new day ahead.
