In Motions

Following apocalyptic events, media often depicts how nature reclaims man made structures and how people adapt to this new landscape. Buildings decay, nature blooms, resulting in subtle moments of beauty between two worlds. This led me to be interested in how materials break down and are reclaimed over time. For this collection, I imagined a fictional character inspired by The Last of Us’s ‘Seraphites’, in order to imagine how someone would navigate and express themselves in this world. In response to the pandemic, there has been a cultural shift towards environmentalism and exploring traditional crafts, resulting in fashion which embraces nature and apocalypse as core aesthetics. I chose to explore the medium of nuno felting to recreate the look of overgrowth, as well as brushed knitwear to show the untamed beauty of nature. Distressing is also used throughout the collection to mimic cracks on buildings. The final garments explore how someone might dress to protect themselves from the environment while also existing in harmony with nature.
