Interlace Collection My collection of 6 earrings are made from interwoven strips of old denim, embellished with colourful embroidery and tassels, with sterling silver caps and ear wires. Jeans are undoubtedly one of the most popular fashion staples across the world and they have been around for more than 100 yrs. The fashion industry is considered one of the most wasteful industries due to its resource intensive and chemical intensive processes and the throw-away nature of today’s consumer culture. During my exploration with fabric jewellery, it became an obvious choice for me as there was a pair of old torn jeans I’ve been meaning to dispose of. Fabric is my choice of material and it is chosen for its unique interwoven quality and its historically western origin. The interlace collection is a narrative of my life, inspired by my recent life experience of relocating to a new country with my family. I’ve moved from Singapore to Vancouver, and this drastic change has made me realise just how deeply rooted I was in my previous community and my desire to create similar bonds and connections here in my new home. Like the brightly coloured treads embellishing my works, I’m sewn into a new community fabric. A new harmony and sense of belonging is achieved. Each piece is the beginning of my new community. The different colourful tread is a reminder to myself that when different people come together, a new beautiful cultural mosaic emerges. Each piece is designed to be fun and festive mood lifters, conversation starters. To be worn to the next gathering where new connections are made.
