Journey Across the Sea - Industrial Project 1

This collection is based on Zheng He's seven expeditions during the Ming dynasty, during the reign of the third emperor Zhu Di. During the expedition, Zheng He trades goods with other kingdoms and in return, he brings a representative of each kingdom back to Nanjing. This also inflicts cultural exchanges with those countries. This collection shows the combinations of modern sportswear with an oversized silhouette and the influence of the Chinese and Javanese cultural integration by using batik tuban, combine with the use of linen, cotton, and cotton twill as the main fabric. Taking color inspired by the expedition, the shades of blue from the sea and the sapphire stone as the representative item from Indonesia and the natural brown shade from the ships as the main color in this collection. The fabric treatment for this collection are combinations of Sashiko embroidery and Satin embroidery, with the imagery of the journey of the expedition, the giraffe represents Qilin is from Malindi, and the motif is from the ceramic vase Zheng He brought from Nanjing. Also using the pin and tucks techniques on the fabric inspired by the ship topsail.
